My Equipment Lists
On this page I've provided lists of gear that I'd typically take into the backcountry on a day trip and on an overnight trip. As you'll see the basic items are carried all the time.
These are not definitive lists but may give you an idea of what you may need. This is what works for me. There's likely to be people reading that think I don't take enough gear and others that think I take way to much. Please feel free to contact me if you have any comments or suggestions to make.
Over Night Trips
Tent
3-4 Season Sleeping Bag
Down (rated to -10C)
Sleeping Mat(s)
Thermarest and closed cell foam
Plastic shopping bags - to be used as tent pegs in snow, rubbish and poo!
Thermals – top and bottom, preferably 100% wool to reduce BO
Waterproof ski pants – preferably with full length side zips
Softshell or fleece jacket
Waterproof shell jacket
Down Jacket
Beanie, Balaclava – Jacket hoods can also do the job especially if you have long hair.
Light gloves – for skiing and/or camp duties
Heavy waterproof gloves – for bad weather
Stove and fuel (enough for additional days)
Cooking pot or billy
Matches and/or lighters
Spork
Plastic Cup or similar
Shovel
Camera and tripod
Food
Water Bottle – carry with water in for first day use and to help melt snow
Suncream
Basic first aid kit
Multitool with plyers
Grey MacIver Tape
Map of subject area
Compass and GPS
Toilet Roll - and plastic bags or poo tube to remove the brown stuff
